  • i With a group of students, we studied islands called coral rags in the Indian Ocean near Tanzania. Coral rags consist of rock that is formed from porous coral. Rain water goes through the rock as through a sieve. Rain water on the on the island settles down onto the underlying salt water, displacing it and causing a lens of fresh water. Plants with a taproot system can suck up some water, especially where topsoil has accumulated.
